Badshah and Shreya Ghoshal released “Mahiya” on November 4, a romantic pop track which is their first studio collaboration. The two have shared the judges’ panel on Indian Idol.
The pairing grew out of the judges’ panel on Indian Idol, where the two have worked together and, according to the label, built a strong on-screen rapport. It also brings together two very different musical reputations: Ghoshal, a multiple National Award winner long associated with romantic melodies, and Badshah, who is better known for urban, hip-hop-leaning pop.
Badshah composed and wrote the song, with production by Hiten. According to the label, it pairs his urban groove with Ghoshal’s melodic vocals and features a sarangi solo. The release frames the track as a more romantic turn for the rapper.
Badshah said taking their Indian Idol chemistry into the studio was a different experience. “It truly feels like a crossover of two different musical universes coming together to tell a universal love story,” he said.
Ghoshal said that after sharing the judges’ table, a collaboration had been “long overdue.” “Badshah has brought a completely refreshing perspective to ‘Mahiya,’” she said.
The music video stars actor and internet personality Avneet Kaur alongside both singers. It was directed by choreographer duo Piyush-Shazia and is set against futuristic car imagery and celestial backdrops. Kaur said she grew up listening to Ghoshal’s songs and has followed Badshah’s music for years, and she credited the duo’s choreography for bringing the song to life on screen.
The single is out on all streaming platforms.
