Spotify has discontinued its Premium Lite tier in India, just six months after introducing it as part of a broader subscription overhaul. The standard plan has been cut to Rs. 139 per month, down from Rs. 199, while the student plan drops to Rs. 69 from Rs. 99. The top-tier Premium Platinum plan holds steady at Rs. 299 per month.
“We occasionally adapt the plans we offer, based on market opportunity to provide choice to and value to users,” a Spotify spokesperson told Moneycontrol, adding that Lite subscribers are being moved to Standard at their existing price point.
India was one of five markets - alongside Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the U.A.E. - where Spotify rolled out the Lite, Standard and Platinum structure in November 2025, replacing a single-plan model with tiers meant to reflect different listening habits. Lite offered ad-free streaming at 160kbps with no download access while Standard added offline downloads and audio up to 320kbps. Platinum includes lossless audio, AI DJ and AI Playlist tools, third-party DJ software integration, and two additional household seats.
Notably, the Duo and Family versions of Platinum are no longer being offered, narrowing multi-user options even as single-tier pricing drops.
The reversal underscores how price-sensitive the Indian market remains for streaming services. It also comes as Spotify leans further into India as a growth market — co-CEOs Alex Norström and Gustav Söderström have both pointed to the country’s scale as central to the company’s next phase of expansion, even as Spotify works to sharpen margins globally.
