Pritam’s Birthday Message Has Fans Wondering If an Era Is Ending

The composer’s reflective note, shared on his 55th birthday, has drawn retirement speculation just months after Arijit Singh’s own exit from playback singing.

Pritam has sparked speculation about his future in Bollywood after sharing a reflective note with fans on Instagram to mark his 55th birthday on June 14.

“Today, I have decided to gift myself a few years to live differently. To catch up on what I’ve missed. Time to set off on new journeys, which have been kept on the back burner for long,” he wrote. “Mainstream is a great ride. But I’ve always been more curious about the roads unexplored.”

The post quickly prompted retirement rumours across social media, as the composer has previously spoken about wanting to step away from the industry’s relentless pace and take a longer break from active work. With multiple projects still underway, the message appears to point towards a hiatus and a new chapter rather than a definitive goodbye.

The timing has drawn particular attention given Pritam’s own comments earlier this year on Arijit Singh’s decision to step away from playback singing. In January, Singh announced via Instagram that he would no longer take on new playback assignments, though he confirmed he would complete previously signed work. Pritam later addressed the decision in an interview saying, “Artists don’t retire. They take a break and redirect to something that is interesting them more. Let him move at his own pace.”

Pritam remains one of Bollywood’s most prominent composers, with hits including “Tum Hi Ho,” “Bandhu,” “Kesariya,” and “Shayad” defining much of contemporary Hindi film music over the past two decades.
