Parikrama, one of India’s most enduring rock bands, are marking 35 years since their formation in 1991 with a special concert at Eldeco Centre on Friday (June 13) and the launch of a new single, “Inside My Skin,” on Tuesday (June 17).

Led by vocalist Nitin Malik, the band has been a defining force in Indian rock since the early ‘90s, having shared stages with Iron Maiden at the Download Festival in England and Deep Purple at the Bandland Festival in India. Their catalog includes fan favorites like “But It Rained,” “Till Treason Turn to Gold,” and “Am I Dreaming” - tracks that have become staples of the Indian rock scene since the early 2000s.

The band was founded in 1991 by Subir Malik, four months before he was set to graduate from Kirori Mal College and join his family’s motor-parts business. Along with Sonam Sherpa, Nitin Malik, Chintan Kalra, Prashant Bahadur, and Rahul Malhotra, Malik started what was meant to be a short-lived project that ended up outlasting nearly every band from its era.

The current lineup includes Nitin Malik on vocals, Abhishek Mittal on lead guitar since 2020, Subir Malik on keyboards, Gaurav Balani on bass, and Srijan Mahajan on drums, along with accompanists violinist Suhail Ali Khan, percussionist Shamu Nath, flutist Shashank Singhania, and sitarist Dhruv Bedi. The band’s original guitarist, Sonam Sherpa, who has since passed away, is remembered for solos that remain etched in fans’ memories.

Parikrama plans to release 50 original songs over the next five years, including a studio version of the fan favourite “Vaporise,” which is already in the works. The June celebrations mark both a look back at three and a half decades and the start of a new chapter with fresh material.
