Odisha's Jyotirmayee Nayak Wins Indian Idol Season 16

Jyotirmayee Nayak, a 24-year-old singer from Bhubaneswar, has won Indian Idol Season 16, closing out the competition with a performance of "Saiyaan O Saiyaan" at the grand finale in Mumbai on July 26. She beat five other finalists, with Tanishk Shukla finishing as first runner-up and Manraj Veer Singh as second runner-up, and takes home a cash prize of Rs. 20 lakh from Sony Entertainment Television. Her win marks the first time a contestant from Odisha has taken the Indian Idol title.

The season, themed "Yaadon Ki Playlist," premiered in October 2025 and ran for roughly ten months, extended twice over its broadcast. Judges Shreya Ghoshal, Vishal Dadlani, and Badshah presided throughout, and the finale featured guest appearances, including Usha Uthup, Udit Narayan, Papon, Kumar Sanu, Shehnaaz Gill, Hema Malini, Leena Chandavarkar, and Urmila Matondkar.

Nayak's run included several standout moments: her performance of "O Jab Tak Hai Jaan Jaane Jahan Main Nachungi" earned a standing ovation from veteran actor Hema Malini, while her rendition of "Jaane Kyun Log Mohabbat Kiya Karte Hain" left Leena Chandavarkar visibly moved, who said she’d like to hear the iconic song specifically in Nayak's voice.

Before joining Indian Idol, Nayak was already established in the Odia music industry and had worked with cancer patients through music therapy. Following the win, Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi congratulated Nayak on social media, calling her the daughter of Odisha's soil.

Nayak called the win surreal, describing the journey from her audition to the finale stage as life-changing. "From walking into the auditions with nothing but a dream to standing here as the winner, this journey has truly been life-changing," she said. She thanked her family, the judges, the show's team, and the viewers who voted for her throughout the season.

With reality singing competitions long serving as a launchpad for aspiring playback singers, Nayak now joins a growing list of Indian Idol winners building careers in the wider music industry, carrying with her a distinction no previous winner has held: the first title for Odisha.
